New snow boosts skiing at Vail, Beaver Creek for Martin Luther King Day holiday
Next storm expected to roll in Monday
Vail saw 7 inches of new snow early Wednesday morning and into the day. Only a couple of inches were in the forecast. Beaver Creek received 5 inches of new snow.
Dry, sunny weather will move in for the weekend, but on Monday another storm moves in – this time with the possibility of significant amounts of fresh snow on the ground for Tuesday morning, according to opensnow.com.
However, the new snow, which is slowly turning around what had been an historically dry season so far, will not allow Vail Resorts to open enough new terrain to lift season pass restrictions for the Martin Luther King Day holiday weekend.
All Epic Local, Merchant, Guest Fee and Community Relations passes will be restricted at Vail and Beaver Creek on Saturday but valid on Sunday and Monday. Snow riders holding those passes can purchase a discounted day ticket on Saturday by showing their pass at the ticket window. Prices vary by type of pass.
The long term forecast is calling for yet another storm Thursday and Friday of next week.
The race is on to accumulate enough new snow to open at least parts of the south-facing Back Bowls, which remain closed this late in the ski season for the first time in 30 years.
