Xcel pipeline project to close Highway 6 between Avon Road roundabout, Rivers Edge Condos starting Sept. 9

Due to the Edwards-to-Meadow Mountain 16-inch pipeline construction project, a section of U.S. Highway 6 west of Avon will be fully closed (24/7) to traffic from Friday, Sept. 9, through Thursday, Sept. 15. The closure will be west of the Avon Road roundabout, from Prater Road/West Beaver Creek Boulevard west 2,200 feet to the Rivers Edge Condos at 37723 U.S. Highway 6.

The intersection of West Beaver Creek Boulevard and the entrance into the Rivers Edge Condos will remain open. No through traffic will be available during the planned construction period, which is anticipated to last six days. Traffic will be detoured west at West Beaver Creek Boulevard/Prater Road and east to Avon Road.

Electronic signs announcing the closure are currently in place. There will be road blocks and flaggers in place during construction work. This will be a full closure, in place 24/7 including the weekend – no buses will be allowed through the closed area.

Xcel Energy is proactively replacing 7.8 miles of 6-inch, high-pressure natural gas line with 16-inch pipe to meet growing customer demand and improve natural gas reliability in the region.

Without increasing the natural gas line's capacity, the company estimates that the communities of Avon, Minturn, Vail, Beaver Creek, and Summit, Grand, Lake and Chaffee counties may experience natural gas shortages in the winter of 2011.

Completion of the mainline 16" pipeline is scheduled for approximately Sept. 27, 2011. Completion of facilities and commissioning (outside of Colorado Department of Transportation right of way) is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2011.
