The Vail Recreation District's (VRD) La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running series continues Sunday (8-28) with another oxygen-depriving race, the 3.2 mile Berry Picker Trail Run, presented by Tiga Advertising.

The race begins at 9 a.m. at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead and will test runners of all abilities on a single track and double track course with an average grade of 14 percent. The race will end at Eagle's Nest at the top of Vail Mountain.

"The Berry Picker Trail is one of Vail's most iconic hiking trails," said VRD race director Marc Thomas. "The run this weekend is a great way to enjoy it in a fun, supportive atmosphere. A lot of people like this race because it's short, but it's still very challenging due to the steepness of the climb."

The Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead will operate from 8 to 9:30 a.m. for race-day spectators. Racers should park in the LionsHead parking structure where parking is free for the summer. Individual race costs are $28 for pre-registration or $38 on race-day. Registration is available by clicking here or by calling 970-479-2280.

Day-of registration will occur at the race starting area until 8:45 a.m. Scott McClarrinon is taking race-action photos of runners throughout the series and photos are available by clicking here. This is the sixth race in the series, which is presented by Suunto.

The La Sportiva Trail Running Series, which was named best series by Colorado Runner magazine in 2005 and 2008, finishes up its 2011 season with the Evergold on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The Evergold, which is presented by Happy Valley Grill, will include a new 5k this year in addition to the 11k. It will begin at the Vail Golf Club and traverse Vail Mountain back to the golf club. Following the run, participants will enjoy an end-of-season brunch provided by Happy Valley Grill at the Vail Golf Club.

Prizes will be presented to the top three finishers of each age group at each race, with series prizes awarded to the top three finishers who compete in at least five events. Raffle prize drawings also will be held at each awards ceremony featuring products from area merchants and national companies.

Joining 2011 series title sponsor La Sportiva are Suunto, Vail Resorts, Beaver Creek Resort Company, Optic Nerve, HydraPouch, FirstBank of Vail, Vail's Mountain Haus, SmartWool,Tiga Advertising, Howard Head Sports Medicine Centers, Steadman Clinic, Gatorade, Journey Films, Save our Soles, Plum TV, KZYR, Trek Light, Chill Towels, Road ID, Sun-Rype, Anti Monkey Butt, Divas Vail Half Marathon, Dusty Boot, Kinetico Water Systems, Happy Valley Grill and Camelbak.
