CDOT lists travel impacts from today's USA Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 3 Time Trial in Vail

August 25, 2011

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) today reminded motorists of travel impacts associated with today's USA Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 3 Time Trial in Vail, during which cyclists will travel on old U.S. Highway 6 (also known as the Vail Bike Path and the Vail Frontage Road) in an eastward direction toward Vail Pass.

The CDOT traveler information website (www.cotrip.org) lists today's closures and motorists are encouraged to sign up for CDOT's real-time email and text alerts, available at www.coloradodot.info by clicking on the green cell phone icon.

Times for delays and closures are estimates and may be subject to change. Additional and unforeseen delays of up to 30 minutes are possible on local roads.

Summary of today's (Thursday, Aug. 25) impacts:

Highway/Delay Description Expected Closure/Delay Start Time Expected Re-Open Time

Westbound I-70, right lane closed on westbound I-70 (one lane will remain open) between Vail Pass and approximately Exit 180, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Westbound I-70, o oversize/overweight vehicles allowed between Vail Pass and U.S. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I-70, Exit 176 (Vail Exit), westbound off-ramp closed intermittently. Motorists should use Exit 173 (West Vail Exit), 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I-70 Exit 180 (East Vail Exit) eastbound and westbound off-ramps closed. Motorists should use Exit 173 (West Vail Exit), 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vail Rest Area (I-70 Exit 190) may be closed due to capacity restrictions, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parking Restrictions on I-70. Parking is not allowed on I-70 at any time.

CDOT would like to remind spectators to abide by parking and camping guidelines for future stages (http://cotrip.org/content/usapcc/camping.html). If any area becomes overwhelmed with vehicles, including trailers, or the number of vehicles in an area is deemed excessive, CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) may clear the area and require vehicles to move to another location.

Although road closures are in place for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists will be allowed to pass through under the guidance of CSP, race officials, and race volunteers as long as they do not pose a safety threat to the race, the riders, or other spectators. Bicyclists will be asked to dismount and walk through the time trial area.
