Eagle County Fairgrounds reopens to horses following equine herpes scare

The Eagle County Fairgrounds will reopen to equine activities Wednesday, June 8, following a three-week closure due to confirmed cases of the EVH-1 virus in horses statewide. The county closed the fairgrounds to all equine users on May 17 to help prevent the spread of the equine herpes virus, which is highly contagious among horses.

The outbreak is thought to have originated at a horse show in Ogden, Utah that took place in early May. The incubation period of EVH-1 is listed at two to 10 days, with the last confirmed case of the virus reported on May 20. No cases of EVH-1 have been reported in Eagle County.

Staff members have cleaned and sanitized all stalls at the fairgrounds; however, equine users should continue to take precautions such as using their own water buckets and not using stalls if not necessary.
