Red Sandstone Park reopens after nearly half-million-dollar renovation

Red Sandstone Park will reopen on Monday, June 4 after a major renovation. The $464,000 project includes a fully remodeled play area, reconstructed parking lot, improved site access, an expanded volleyball court and new landscaping. The park's picnic areas will be opened the week of June 11 to allow time for the new sod to establish.

The play area was designed by local artist Karl Krueger with town staff and consists of oversized human figures that seemingly manipulate the various elements of the play structures. The artistic concept, titled “Playing with Giants” is consistent with other recently renovated play areas in Vail where an artist is included as part of the design team to develop truly unique and exciting playgrounds. Other parks with art-inspired play features include Pirateship, Donovan, Ford and Bighorn.

The Red Sandstone renovations were constructed by local contractors including R.A. Nelson, Spiegel Excavating, Mountain Steel and Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes. The park will host several volleyball games for the King of the Mountain Open Volleyball Tournament over Father's Day weekend.

For more information, contact Gregg Barrie, the town's landscape architect, at 479-2337.
