Free firewood available at Sylvan Lake State Park

This fall, free firewood is available at Sylvan Lake State Park. The wood was cut last year during a project to remove hazardous trees infested by mountain pine beetles. The wood is primarily lodge pole pine and the trees have been cut into three- to six-foot logs. The wood is available only for private, non-commercial use, and an appointment is necessary to collect.

“The wood has been stacked for a year and is well-seasoned,” said David Meline, Sylvan Lake State Park Manager. “We see this as an opportunity for area residents to get an easy source of firewood, and help us with the final clean-up of this project.”

Those who wish to take advantage of the free firewood offer should contact the park at 970-328-2021 to set up a time. They will be issued a permit to collect up to one cord of wood. The designated collection area is accessible by truck, but trailers are not permitted. The logs are available “as is,” and no additional cutting on the park will be allowed. Wood collection will continue as long as supplies and weather conditions allow.

There is no fee to collect the wood, but a $7 daily or $70 Annual State Parks Pass is required. For additional information and to schedule a pick-up time, contact the Sylvan Lake Visitor Center at 970-328-2021.
