Vail police issue moose warning after several sightings around town
Vail police today issued a moose alert following a number of recent sightings in Vail.
Moose have been spotted near Buffehr Creek and the North Trail, as well as other locations in Vail.
Police are urging residents and guests to use these tips from the Colorado Division of Wildlife to avoid potential conflicts with the enormous and potentially dangerous herbivores:
* Female moose (cows) are very protective of their young (calves) to the point of being dangerous if approached or caught off guard.
* Keep pets away as moose can get aggressive around them.
* Do not approach a moose. If charged by a moose, try to put a tree, boulder, vehicle or other large object in between you and the moose. If knocked to the ground, get up. Moose victims typically receive injury from stomping.
The police department is encouraging notification of moose sightings within the town by calling 479-2200. For more information on moose behavior, go to the Colorado Division of Wildlife website at www.wildlife.state.co.us.
