Vail's Vonn skips World Cup slalom with slight concussion after training crash in Germany
Ski and Snowboard Club Vail's Lindsey Vonn sat out a World Cup slalom in Germany today after suffering a mild concussion while training giant slalom Wednesday. Vonn posted a video of that nasty spill on her facebook page.
“I got up this morning prepared to race, but after a few warm-up runs, I wasn't feeling confident on my skis,” said Vonn, the most successful ski racer in U.S. history with 39 career World Cup wins.
“Normally I can fight through injuries, but head injuries are different,” Vonn added. “You can't just grit your teeth and go. I'll go through my normal routine tomorrow morning in Zwiesel and if things feel more normal, I'm hoping to start the giant slalom.”
Multiple Olympic medalist Julia Mancuso also took the day off in order to rest ahead of Tuesday's World Alpine Ski Championships in Garmisch. The women get going with a super-G race on Tuesday.
“I was originally planning to run the slalom, but changed my plan after Sestriere (Italy last weekend) in favor of some more giant slalom training prior to World Championships,” Mancuso said.
“The training in Reiteralm was awesome. One day I had the entire place to myself and they gave me a snowmobile so I could make quicker laps. Hopefully the extra training pays off in tomorrow's giant slalom and also next week at World Champs.”Austrian Marlies Schild won today's slalom, her fifth slalom victory of the season. Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, Wyo.) was the top American in 20th. Ten racers – including overall World Cup leader Maria Riesch of Germany -- went out in thick fog.
Vail's Sarah Schleper failed to qualify for a second run.
