Vonn battles bug, still cracks top 10 in Croatian night slalom
Schild wins again, closes gap in overall hunt
Vail's Lindsey Vonn battled through a nasty stomach illness to finish 9th in a night slalom in Zagreb, Croatia, as Austria's Marlies Schild won her fifth slalom of the season and cut Vonn's overall lead to 101 points.
Vonn, who's also won five World Cup races so far this season (all speed events), turned in the second fastest second run after finishing 24th in the first run.
Vail's Mikaela Shiffrin, who achieved her first ever podium in the last women's slalom in Lienz, Austria, failed to finish the first run of tonight's slalom. Heavy fog hampered the the first run of the longest women's slalom on tour.
Vonn, fighting through a stomach illness, didn't even conduct the customary course inspection for the first run.
The women's World Cup now moves to speed with a downhill and super G Jan. 7-8 in Bad Kleinkircheim, Austria. Those events favor Vonn -- going for her fourth overall title -- over Schild, who's a slalom specialist.
