Open house for remodeled Vail Fire Station set for June 19
Vail’s newly remodeled fire station at 42 W. Meadow Dr. will be celebrated during a community open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19. The event will include guided tours of the facility, refreshments and a hose uncoupling ceremony - in lieu of a ribbon cutting – led by Fire Chief Mark Miller and the Town Council. Parking is available at the Municipal Building lot or the Vail Village parking structure.
Designed by Pierce Architects and constructed by GE Johnson, the renovation of Station 2 includes numerous functional improvements to the building, built in 1971, while retaining its original footprint. Included is the renovation of the bay area that provides a more functional space for trucks and equipment, plus utility upgrades, energy efficiencies, technology enhancements, and across the board upgrades to meet current building and fire codes, including a fire sprinkler system.
Additional features include new public restrooms on the north side of the building and two employee housing units on the second floor. The housing units, which will be occupied by employees who serve in critical first responder roles, replaced a dorm area once used by resident firefighters. The student residents are now housed at Station 3 in West Vail.
Chief Miller says the $2.2 million remodel will go a long way in providing an efficient space with adequate workflow and enhancement of the town’s Wi Fi capabilities and cell service to Vail Village and Lionshead. “We’re thrilled,” says Miller. “This is a win-win for the community and the department because it not only provides more efficient space but also a much needed public restroom facility while the employee housing units will increase the number of our personnel living in Vail.”
The station is staffed 24/7 by a three member crew with an engine, brush unit and technical equipment.
Miller says he and the members of the department are especially grateful to Donna Giordano, a Vail resident, who graciously donated funds to construct an inset of the department’s logo at the station’s main entrance.
Renovation of Station 2 follows the opening of the new fire station in West Vail, Station 3, in 2011. Long-range plans for additional fire service improvements include a much needed renovation of Station 1 in East Vail which is over 30 years old.
The department responded to nearly 1,800 calls for service in 2012. For details, contact Chief Miller at 477-3474.
