Eagle County Democrats to host Fiscal Policy Institute expert to discuss Proposition 103

Carol Hedges from the Fiscal Policy Institute of Colorado will be at E-Town, Riverwalk, Edwards on Monday, Oct. 10 at 11:30 a.m. to discuss the statewide Proposition 103, state Senator Rollie Heath's plan to mitigate the funding crisis for Colorado schools for the next five years.

The Executive Committee of the Eagle County Democrats discussed Proposition 103. In general, concerns were raised about voter perception of having too many tax increases on the ballot. Some members felt that, while Proposition 103 was a step in the right direction, it did not go far enough to address the state funding for K-12 education. No action was taken by the Executive Committee regarding Proposition 103.

When the state legislature meets again in January they will continue to deal with budget shortfalls and are likely to face strong efforts to cut additional funds from Colorado schools. We urge our state legislators to develop a long term solution to fully fund the education of Colorado's children.

Locally, the Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse the Eagle County Ballot Issues 3B (Eagle River Valley) and 3E (Roaring Fork Valley). The Committee urges all Democrats to vote in favor of these issues. They would increase annual property taxes by about $20 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. The Executive Committee believes this is a small price to pay to ensure our children are receiving the best possible education during these difficult economic times.

If you would like to attend please RSVP to Carole Onderdonk at conderdonk@centurytel.net or call 970-524-1016.
