Vail Restaurant Month rolls on with Carmichael, Miller bike, hike event on Vail Mountain
One of the best things about living in Vail is having the opportunity to interact with world-class athletes on an almost weekly basis.
Without dropping names, suffice to say I've climbed, hiked, golfed, fly fished, snowmobiled, alpine skied, tele-skied, heli-skied, paraglided, rafted, kayaked and mountain biked with some of the very best in the world at their chosen sports. And my kids have taken lessons fairly inexpensively from the many top pros who live, play and train in this high-altitude outdoor sports mecca.
If you're so inclined, that opportunity for adults presents itself once again this weekend with today's Run, Ride, Refresh event at 1 p.m. on Vail Mountain, featuring a mountain bike ride with former Lance Armstrong coach Chris Carmichael and a mountain trail run with Ellen Miller, a local running and climbing legend who was the first North American woman to summit Mount Everest from both the northern and the southern routes. Carmichael is founder of Carmichael Training Systems.Soaking up some training knowledge and inspiration from these two might be enough for some folks, but what makes this event so unique is that it's part of the second week (Health & Outdoors) of Vail Restaurant Month.
So after doing the same 4.7-mile, 1,200-vertical-foot loop a couple times with Miller and Carmichael, participants can hang out on the deck of the Vail Chophouse and talk training techniques while sipping some Moët & Chandon Champagne or a glass of Michelob Ultra.
Vail Restaurant Month continues with Family Week Oct. 3-9 and concludes Oct. 10-16 with Love Fest Week. Most of Vail's best restaurants and bars are participating with great specials and events the entire month.
It's an outstanding opportunity to take in Vail's vast array of culinary options in the unhurried, relaxed off-season atmosphere of fall – especially given that weather forecasters are calling for a stunning Indian Summer weekend with fall foliage at its absolute zenith.
