Middle Creek flash flood damages basements of Dobson Ice Arena, Vail Library, two lodges

A flash flood of Middle Creek in Vail caused minor water damage in the basements of the Evergreen Lodge, Dobson Ice Arena, the Vail Library and Lodge at Lionshead Tuesday evening, according to Vail officials.

The flooding occurred during a rain storm just before 8 p.m., and emergency responders were on the scene Tuesday night. There were no reported injuries or evacuations required.

Middle Creek runs through a culvert under Interstate 70 on the north side of the highway just west of the Main Vail roundabout and then flows back into the original creek channel between the Evergreen Lodge and Vail International Condos.

From there it continues south along the eastern edge of the town-owned parcel where Dobson Ice Arena and the Vail Library are located. At that point it feeds into Gore Creek.

Public Works crews assisted in sandbagging key locations and removed debris until the water returned to its banks on the north and south ends of the creek at about 10 p.m.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, crews started excavation of a 150-foot section of Middle Creek west of the Evergreen Lodge in an attempt to return the remaining flood waters to the stream bed. Damage assessments will continue Wednesday morning.

Dobson Arena and the Vail Public Library will open Wednesday with regular operating hours. The two lodges also remain open.
