CDOT finishes rock work near Georgetown, won't close Interstate 70 Wednesday
The Colorado Department of Transportation successfully pried loose about 40 massive boulders on Georgetown Hill above Interstate 70 today, reopening the highway to through traffic around 5 p.m. and announcing it will not be closed Wednesday, April 6.
That was a possibility depending on how the rock mitigation work went, but crews accomplished the work in one day, although minor delays of up to 20 minutes are expected on the stretch of I-70 between Georgetown and Silver Plume beginning at 10:30 a.m. and lasting until 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
I-70 was closed between the junction of U.S. Highway 40 at Empire and at U.S. Highway 9 at Silverthorne from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.
CDOT begins work on another rock-fall mitigation project along I-70 in Glenwood Canyon on Wednesday. Two phases of work totaling $1.2 million from CDOT's Rockfall Program budget are nearing completion this month.
On Wednesday, crews will be working at mile marker 121.9 and 122.5 west of the Glenwood Canyon tunnel to complete scaling and rock clearing in those areas. The work will require lane restrictions for public safety.
From 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a right lane closure in both directions in the work zone and some periodic traffic stops in both directions. Motorists can expect traffic slowing and delays. After Wednesday, impacts will be minor and will include some traffic shifts around the work zone.
