The anticipation and excitement for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships ran high Thursday evening, Sept. 12, as 500 people from throughout the Vail Valley gathered at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for the official kickoff of the 2015 volunteer recruitment process.

In addition to enjoying free barbeque and beverage, participants had the opportunity to talk to representatives of the various 2015 operational areas and committees in order to get a better idea of where they might like to volunteer their time prior to and during the Championships.

“I was an awards volunteer for the 1989 World Championships,” offered Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation and head of the 2015 Organizing Committee. “It was an incredible experience that changed my life. We are so grateful for everyone’s commitment to helping us welcome the world back to our community in 2015.”

Vail resident Susi Brenden earned the honor of being the first person to officially apply as a 2015 volunteer, completing her online application at 12:24 a.m. on September 12, just 24 minutes after the application went live online.

The 2015 Championships will be Brenden’s third, having volunteered for the 1989 and 1999 World Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek, while also having the distinction of skiing the opening day of Vail Mountain in 1962.

Anyone interested in being considered for a volunteer role for the 2015 Championships will need to complete the volunteer application online, even if they have previously contacted the Organizing Committee about volunteering. The form is available at www.volunteer.vailbeavercreek2015.com.

By Opening Ceremonies, the 2015 volunteer team is expected to number 2,500 strong, with people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe pitching in to staff all areas of the Championships.

Scheduled from February 2-15 of 2015, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek are expected to showcase athletes from over 70 nations, with an estimated 750 million worldwide television viewers and an onsite media and broadcast entourage of approximately 1,500 members.
